PES 2012 – What To Expect
With a new PES announcement just around the corner, we take time to dissect what to expect from this years game.
Hype. It’s a dangerous word for any PES fan, and perhaps something that can be attributed to WENB more than the series over the years. From PES 2008 to 2010, the series went into decline, with rare moments of confidence in games that paled in significance compared to it’s PS2 heyday. As a fansite, and as a key component to gathering news for the series, we made mistakes in lead up to launch – something we apologized for in the past.
Then came the run up to PES 2011, and a promise from us to inform you as honestly as possible, and to try and gauge hype and excitement more accurately. I feel we did this better than ever, and what we got is a new game that brought back fans of the series and football fans alike. Sure the game has it’s issues, but for the first time we saw a clear direction from the team, and one which belonged to the consoles at hand. It was also clean slate, a fresh start you could say from the WEP team. A solid foundation to bring forward the ideas and representation of football Seabass and his team have envisaged for many years. And thats of course where PES 2012 comes in.
I’d like to take you to a conversation myself and Jon Murphy (PES Team Leader) had late last year when talking about this years game. While I can’t go into everything, the direction of the series came up many times. As we discussed this, it became clear to me just what PES 2012 would be, and that’s a game for the fans. As we delved into the specifics, even back then, Jon said one thing very important to me, and that’s the feedback collated would be key in shaping the future.
It might seem simple, or even expected, but it’s a choice which takes a lot of focus and motivation. As a games developer, there are many things that you yourself want to do, and even include in the series that might mean certain feedback isn’t attainable. But to base everything in what you do in what the fans want, well that’s a major decision.
I’ll use an example from the competitors camp. With the FIFA series, a focus on feedback and listening has always been there, but it’s clear the way it’s approached is very different. The company as a whole have a vast array of ideas, and the dev team (to their credit) are forever trying to think up the next big thing. Whether it be a brand new mode or important gameplay inclusion. This, as we’ve seen in the past years, has also brought many problems. EA’s inability to be happy with what they have and improve has caused things like manager mode/career mode to be severely flawed. Fans of the game would have been happy for EA to keep the mode as it was, and fix bugs while adding key features. With the ethos of doing something more, the FIFA team have continually struggled to hit solid ground, forcing themselves to always do something new, scared of being seen as standing still.
So this is where PES 2012 comes back in. It’s a game that has a team focused on a different ideology, and belief in what they want. Much can be said of the working environment the WEP team find themselves, void of the pressures of accumulating massive sales that hang over EA. For them it’s a clear path, a path which includes making a game the fans want to see post PES 2011.
Recently I posted on the boards how amazed I was how much feedback was already implemented into PES 2012. Elements that caused most frustrations had been either improved or completely redone, with further focus on getting everything that the fans wanted into the game. And that’s what I feel PES 2012 will become. PES 2011 had some good moments, and some fantastic elements that rang true to any real life football fan. Rather than trying to re-write history, they’ve decided to take stock of the situation, and build on the game that brought them back so many fans – critically and sales wise.
If there might be some of you out there reading this now expecting PES 2012 to be a ‘fixed’ PES 2011, then perhaps I’ve done my job of tempering excitement. At the same time if you do truly think that, then once the game has been announced you’ll be pleasantly surprised. While the focus of the game is to act on feedback the fanbase has been excellent in providing, the team have had ample time to add a whole host of elements fresh and new that will blow your mind.
And I’ll leave it there, as I wouldn’t want to spoil the surprises ahead, or been accused of building hype. After all, does a great game need any hype to precede it? I’ll let you decide.
Watch out for our podcast Tuesday evening for more, with some further insight on what could be a massive shake up for PES and it’s future. That change? PES Director Shinji Enomoto being promoted to Vice President of Konami. Massive implications, all incredibly positive.
See you then.
Soulrak says:
Are we serious here? Did someone just get threatened for having a negative opinion? I thought this site was going to be more objective & realistic about the game? lol As if this development team hasn’t deserved it. Bottom line is Ockrass’s post isn’t far from being honest. This game has needed a major overhaul for a looooong time. While some people may accept that pes11 was an improvement it still doesn’t hide the fact that it’s merely slapping a band-aid on a game that’s needed improvement for a handful of years. Next gen has been disastrous for PES as proven by the rocketing rise in popularity for FIFA & plummeting fanbase for PES. Anyone who says any different is kidding themselves.
Taz says:
Also, this is a minor point but I have never been impressed with KONAMI’s attention to detail. Things like the referee blowing the whistle before the linesman raises his flag for offside. The referee pointing in random direction for free kicks. The referee having a Kit Kat before letting you take a Goal Kick. Keepers without a power bar for kicking or throwing. List goes on. I really hope PES 2012 is a finished game as opposed to the PES 2011 Beta we got this year.
Firelite says:
Seriously guys it’s obvious this is a semi-offical FANSITE: it’s not a place for objective critisms of PES. As for banning “negative” posters again the mods can the run their site anyway they want. This isn’t some experiment in free speech and democracy guys – just a PES fansite :)
Adrian says:
Fifa is Crap because it is dead wood people only like fifa because of it`s official teams and logo`s if it didn`t have any official stuff it will be dead. it has nothin to offer come on since when can canadian/americans can Make a Football game and 1 more thing stop complaining about PES 2011 it is a Brilliant Game u shud try playin it bit More A**holes
Kitana Media says:
@ Soulrak,
Dont feed me with that rubbish, please. He’s been on here for ages jumping on people for having a positive opinion. We pride are ourselves for being the place for the fans, and support positivity on here in general. Rather than moaning, get yourself in the feedback section and help make the game better.
Secondly, you need to also learn to respect peoples opinions. If someone is happy with the game, let them be. Saying they’re kidding themselves is atrocious, it’s their opinion. You might find if you respect their opinions they’ll respect yours.
no more nonsense on here.
Kitana Media says:
@ Adrian,
I think the famous saying is don’t feed the trolls.
Let us moderate, reactions like that don’t help the situation, you’re being just as bad as them.
Felix says:
No disrespect to the moderator (Kitana Media), but that’s purely out of line. It’s undemocratic to silence a person’s voice simply because they have different views than others. I know this isn’t a place for a political discussion, but you are opening up the topic, not anyone else. Before you said anything, people were being civil and no one was so insulted or irate by someone’s comment as you are, for some unspoken reason. You CLEARLY believe nothing is wrong with the game; that’s fair enough. But how can you expect for PES to grow if the leading PES site isn’t open to criticism, whether it be here or in the feedback section? I’m still glad to see there are some people like Soulrak and others who will keeping holding PES to the highest standards, that FIFA is trying to attain each year. If you want to silence their voices, it’s entirely in your hands. However, if you do, people will start to see PES for what it’s unfortunately become: a game led by developers who aren’t interested in an overhaul, but instead want to release a game, year after year, with not nearly as many changes as there should be.
As you can tell, I’m not exactly “satisfied” with PES (and am not hiding the fact), but if you think coddling the game and saying everything is alright, you’ll be one of the reasons that PES will continue to disappoint and see more users willing to try FIFA. We have to get back to the gold old days, but saying everything is alright and sweeping issues under the rug is purely counterproductive. I hope my tone and language haven’t offended anyone (including Kitana Media), and if so, I humbly apologize in advance for any distress my “cruel” comments may have caused.
Kitana Media says:
Oh come on Felix, please don’t give me that. If you have read anything I’ve written, heard the podcasts, then you know I’m not happy with the game.
My problem is the genuine rudeness from certain members, and the way they find it difficult to respond to people without being rude or having a condescending tone.
Being constructive with your criticism isn’t difficult, neither is being respectful when responding to other people, but some people find it difficult to negotiate. You only have to venture into the forums to see we welcome negativity, as long as it’s done without offending users and respecting people have different opinions.
Take Ockrass. He’s being warned before for disrespecting staff members, I jumped on him as it’s not his first offense. You need to let us moderate our site, and not try and twist it into a battle between freedom speech.
If you’re rude towards members it won’t be tolerated. If you don’t think you’re being rude then some of you need to reevaluate your perspective and develop your people skills. WENB won’t tolerate anything of the sort.
Felix says:
Thanks for your response. I sincerely appreciate it. If I may, I want to play devil’s advocate for a moment.
Although I do admit that some members are being rude, it can be argued that it isn’t coming from a bad place. These are just simply PESers who are at their wit’s end about a substantial lack of progress from Konami. Even I have faced it from the forum. I made a topic, strongly suggesting Konami give us updates through the forums of what they like from our ideas, what they don’t, and what they are seriously considering. Within a day, it was deleted. I don’t know the reasons why, but I took that very harshly as a statement from winningelevenblog and Konami that the communication is one way, without there being concrete progress.
If I were in the position of these “rude” posters, my mindset would be that Konami aren’t taking the fans seriously and until we all unite and show we won’t tolerate these sub-par improvements, there won’t be much change at all. Personally, and I believe I speak for many fans when I say that I believe Konami haven’t handled the switch to next gen (for some reason), know they have a small, dedicated following that will keep buying PES, despite any lack of REAL improvements. They’ve gone from the glory days of PES 6 to, what I believe, a corporate-like mentality that milks its customers without really delivering the promise of a new game. The dwindling sales and PESers switching to FIFA only support this unfortunately.
The footballing game industry is a business and like any business, must deliver the best product available. The numbers show Konami and Seabass aren’t doing this.
I hate to just point out problems; that isn’t productive towards making a solution. It only reitterates the environment of rudeness and negativity. I believe that Konami have to be more transparent in how they deal with the users (ie. us). Maybe it’s because they are Japanese and a healthy amount of users are English speaking, but communication has to be made frequently. PES is at a point where only the really dedicated and stubborn players will keep buying it year after year. Many players, however, aren’t as stubborn and willing to try PES. Like any business that many have lost confidence in, PES must be more transparent with its fans, communicate more frequently and effectively, and remake their engine, graphics, animations, etc. from SCRATCH! Sorry if my response was very businessy; I am a business major and understand what lengths a company must go to in order to restore confidence and a customer base.
Once again, thanks for the response moderator and I URGE more of a swift, won’t-take-anymore-bull mentaility from the PES community. If not, Seabass and company will just continue to give what they want, when they want, and PES will keep losing sales and fans. It’s all up to PES to see how serious they are about this. The time for talking and promises is over; it’s time to actually do something big, Seabass.

Been a loyal player of the series starting from the very 1st winning eleven & iss.. WE2011/PES2011 had ALLOT of improvements.. But its the usual story of konami.. 1 step forward & 2 steps back..!? I mean they had problems in the 2009 which they sorted in the 2010 game.. Then had the same problem in the 2011 game..!? I mean how do konami manage to do that..??? For example.. Having to have a 4 man wall to defend a free kick just inside your half.. Then in 2010 you can remove them.. Then in the 2011game you cant remove them..!? I mean have the konami team EVER played or warched a game of football before..?? Lol.. Its getting beyond a joke.. & dont get me started on shooting, player switching, removal of the classic camera angle, penalties & the “new defensive system”.. Oh dear konami.. Or should i say con-army..!? I have gone back to WE/PES2010 because of the DREADFUL shooting.. I mean theres not much difference in a slight tap or a fully pressed shot.. ITS POOR & NOT GOOD ENOUGH..!? Please employ some fans of football instead of Jon Murphy.. As i dont think he does a good job.. Nothing personal..! This is the last chance im giving WE/PES.. as i give them my hard earnt money for half finished games (on PS3).. We need a football game withe same quality the makers of Call Of Duty gave to the PS3 shoot-em-up genre.. I REALLY hope they get it sorted this time because i have loved playing the series over the years on multiple formats..
Please sort it out..!!
Taz says:
Couldn’t agree with more Holy Ghost.
Playing these PES games makes you wonder whether KONAMI actually play the game they make or are they too busy making PES 2014.
dr dude says:
for me this is last chance saloon time, for the past three years i’ve bought into the hype this website has blown up and if its still unplayable after a month, then thats it, as I’ve spent around £400 on Konami footy titles (probably more) and to me the “improvements” you guys keep beating on about and the “improvements” Konami say are in the game just aren’t there.
It seems pretty pointless to list these again, everyone knows what they are, just look at other posts and you’ll see the general consensus is that it needs overhauling badly
torch says:
Just got beat in semi final of world cup due to poor AI and bad animations, messi volley from 12 yards out facing AWAY from the goal, a shot that would have dislocated a real players knee, shot and overall players animations have to improved again, passing power needs improving, tapping pass will at times launch it down the line, same thing with shots, need to be precise with the power and placement, defenders to pass first time instead of taking a touch and then getting caught in possession, better ball control when near the touchline or by line, amount of times you lose a ball near the edges because of a heavy touch is ridiculous. Better through ball passing, you know sometimes the computer screws up your through ball (over or underhit) so the defender can get it first to keep the ‘balance’ of play. Put speed demons like lennon in as speed demons, forget about the balance of play, it’s our own fault if we can’t handle their pace. Just a few gripes.
hazzaa says:
hi,i’m playing pes since first j league ,every game has goodthings and badthings but as what i played more than 12 years konami are doing good things and superb games at the end i hope and i’m sure that konami will make and give us a great game pes 2012 will be great…finally i hope the recheck some players abilities such as di maria ,pedro, pastore, etc and we expect new stadiums and many surprises konami used to give it to the fans
reenie says:
Fix the game first, get rid of problems and bugs and then start worrying about expanding the game. The less speed and more physical just clashes and makes the game feel very cagey, its needs to be faster for players like messi and controlled and defined more

Sounds Great! BUT!
“the team have had ample time to add a whole host of elements fresh and new that will blow your mind.
“I wouldn’t want to spoil the surprises ahead, or been accused of building hype.”
Surely “by blowing our mind” we can definitely accuse you of building some “hype” :P
Viva PES2012!!
jimmyf50 says:
dont build hype yet says the info will blow your mind lol. i cant help but be exited for pes 2012 but thats cause im a fan boy “hands up”. pes 2011 was ok but after a few months just got annoying for me.maybe im growing out of football games idk but i rember the days seasons used to go by in weeks and end up doin 15 to 20 seasons in one game, last 5 years i strugled to do 4 to 5 heres just another fan boy lost in hope PLESAE O PLEASE be another pes 5 that feelin ill never forget.
Xavi Torres says:
Well PES 2011 was all right. I rate it 3 1/2 stars out of five. The passing system was good, but GK also needs a power bar, also better reflexes, can’t a GK for once save with one hand instead of pouncing like a cat? I read somewhere that PES 12 will add more leagues. That would be great! Argentinean league, Portuguese league, and maybe Russian or Turkish league could be added also. I am from Spain and Colombia, so I think that in Master League you should be able to transfer players from the Copa Libertadores teams, we can transfer from Other European Teams, so why not from South America? These are my suggestions for now, take care everyone and God bless!!!
Discostu1985 says:
People have a right of opinion but how your opinion is put across needs some consideration!!!!!!!. My honest opinion is that as a PES fan since its ISS days i firmly believe there has not been one PS3 version of PES which done the series any justice as KONAMI has lost there focus as old PS1 & PS2 PES games had amazing gameplay with excellent passing, shooting, AI, training games(use to love taking free kicks on the target game and the keep ball training games) but after all these great aspects the graphics and licenses were poor but……….. we didnt care because gameplay was that good.. Move to the PS3 version and now graphics are amazing but gameplay is awful and that is being kind!!!!
PES 2012 needs to go back to BASICS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dan says:
Konami’s PES series is like Wenger’s Arsenal of today. Revered for past success and unique brand and style of revolutionary football. Nowadays both Arsenal and Konami have unfortunately become complacent, delusional and pathetic underachievers as well as abit of a laughing stock since 2005 and 2006 respectively – content to live in the glory days of yesteryear while the rest of the competition pass them by.
With specific reference to Konami, I am in my early 30′s and a near life long fan of the PES series. Been playing the game since its first incarnation of ISS and ISS Deluxe on the SNES. One thing I am completely mystified about and would genuinely like to know is what happened to/reasons for discontinuing the near perfect next gen PES6 engine/code Konami released in 2006-2007 exclusive to the 360. That engine/code was REAL PROGRESS in my opinion.
On a parting note, it just seems so silly and wholly desperate for Konami to abolish their own business model to that of their competitor as reflected by the significant changes made [for the worst] to PES branding and gameplay from PES6 to PES 2008 and beyond.
My two cents for what it’s worth.
