Podcast 144 – Shisha, Blowjobs and PES

Happy new year! After a long hiatus, we’re back with WENB podcast 144.

Asim is joined by Bryan as always, but this time they’re joined by a special guest known as Caniggia. If you’re a PES fan that has any involvement in the community or visit our forums, you’ll know who this man is. Legend.

The guys mainly talk about PES 2016, giving their personal thoughts about the game and where they’re at with it at the moment. Beyond that, they also gently touch upon the subject of PES 2017, what they want and what fans should perhaps expect.

It’s a bumper podcast with all sorts of opinions floating around, but that’s the beauty of it. Whether you agree, disagree or are indifferent – hope you enjoy it. :)

These days, I’ve only been playing PES and Fallout. So yeah, I’ve definitely enjoyed PES. Nonetheless, gameplay-wise:

    1) Lack of fouls. This could be because the AI slide tackles way too well, and also the skipping-over animation happens much too often.
    2) AI still doesn’t cross the ball enough, and it definitely seems to be tied to long pass vs short pass tactics. If a player is open, the player should be the passer’s target regardless of tactics. It’s like they don’t want to score lol Also, the AI is guaranteed to cross the ball all the time after calling for a short corner.
    3) Defenders aren’t aggressive enough sometimes and end up continuing moving backwards even when the player pushes the ball too far in front of them.
    4) Goalies need a little more tuning.
    5) Shooting needs to be a little less accurate, too many shots find the corners easily.
    6) The AI is not aggressive in pushing the ball when losing and time is running out.
    7) Team AI does an iffy job of optimizing Game Plan positions, and seeking to fill those positions (Become a Legend and Master League). It blows my mind why so many better options stay on the bench, or why a LMF and RMF are switched when their OVRs would be better in their native positions.
    8) AI sometimes still celebrates even when being blown out…
    9) Responsiveness suffers a little on -1 game speed

    Presentation wise:
    1) Despite license issues, well done generic stadiums (lots), kits, and broadcast packages are still possible! Hopefully kits are easier to introduce next year.
    2) Authentic faces are awesome. Can’t wait to see them add more. Yet, gameplay cam needs more pop.
    3) Cutscenes showing manager reactions. More emotion!

    Become a Legend:
    1) Let us choose our number
    2) STATS! Save year to year records for teams, competitions, and historical records!
    3) Add manager and agent interactions, like asking for playing time, playing a certain position etc; for agents, make $ mean something again to acquire better agents, etc.
    4) I don’t know if this is a thing but have Team Spirit or just chemistry influence team form.

    Misc:
    – More animations, improved graphics (duh), better commentary for all languages
    – “Create a Celebration” feature perhaps?
    – Online matchmaking should also be filtered based on passing assistance level

These are all my hopes of stuff to get sorted for PES 2017. A lot of this was said in the podcast. Anyways, gotta go back to playing PES 2016 :)

PES 2016 is another step in the right direction over pes 2015 but more work on the gameplay is required to bring it up to the levels of pes 6

    1. More balanced keepers that react quicker to low shots and rebounds inside the box

    2, fix manual headers

    3. Improve response times and allow better dribbling / turning whilst sprinting

    4. More control and variety for chip shots

    5. Not enough higher trajectory shots when using the R2 shot

    6. Better defender responsiveness – the player movements are still too stiff which is related to animation transitions

    7. Bring back the pes 2010 birds eye view zoom in and out capability for replays

    8. Better cursor switching

    9. Less player lock ons to loose balls – more freedom needed

If I think of more I shall post further

I think Asim defends pes 2016 a it too much isn’t very objective about the game. Pes 2016 is too Arcady for my liking, but that’s just my opinion. It’s a gr8 improvement on Pes 2015 but it’s too Arcady, I’d prefer a more simulation like game. I hate:
    – the skaty animations/ poor footplanting in pes 2016,
    -the ping pong passing
    – poor body positioning when in certain situations ( more contextual animations needed) i.e. Shooting from awkward positions, passing….
    – all players trap the ball like messi, Technique stat seems to do nothing. In old pes stats ment a lot, same thing in FIFA 16 but not in pes 16
    – I hate It when they say the exploits are only online. They’re not! Those same flaws are in the offline mode. The pressing problem is also in offline difference being that most adults don’t have friends coming over to play pes offline. So u don’t notice it.

ASIM be objective, Pes 16 is a good game but it has a lot of flaws, and quite frankly I hate the Arcady direction Konami are going with the ping pong gameplay.

It’s the simple things like cursor switching and more direct control over players and tactics that make pes 2016 an inferior game to say PES 6 which was almost 10 years ago

PES 2013 is over rated – it was unbalanced in terms of headers and tackling but it had better ai and better responsiveness and better cursor switching than pes 2016

Brain talking about the intensity bar made me think whatever happened to it? I remember being able to chose red, orange, green or something like that on the fly during a match to dictate how aggressive your team would play, which in turn directly effected the stamina of the players.

It makes sense to bring it back to balance out the game. Allow the intensity bar to have direct impact on the effectiveness of the tactic you are playing, as well as the players stamina. It shouldn’t be a blanket rule where everyone of your players stamina is empty come 70mins, it should take into account the players stamina stat as well.

eg. If you play high pressing with 100% intensity then your team will last about 70mins of the game, where the penalty for a player that has no stamina left is -5 stat points in all categories. If you play high pressing with 50% intensity your team will last out the game but your high pressing tactic will not work as well because the team isn’t pushing hard enough. It would make you consider your tactics a lot more and would stop one tactic minded play online.

In regards to animations I fully understand the fork in the road that PES has come to. What would you want? The nice snappy feel of the game which we all love or more animations that could hamper the snappy feel? I know at this point I want the snappy PES feel. This all plays into the whole ice skating thing as well, instead of ice
skating you would have to have another animation so the players looks
natural when taking a shot or passing, however, that animation will add a
very small delay to whatever your trying to do. Its a hard balance between more natural animations, or ultimately being able to do what you want, when you want it. The PES snappy feel is the only thing for me that makes it more of an enjoyable gameplay experience then Fifa, which if you notice has amazing array of animations yet it still feels like your driving a tank. In the end if they can implement more animations with fluid transitions between each animation and still maintain the snappy feel then they are on to a winner.

cro if you don’t like pes go play poor of game Fiffa

  • SnakeCRO

You learn how to play proper football and then you will appreciate a more realistic game of football. PES has become a FIFA clone for kids. I won’t play any if they don’t change.

i can’t understand some people pes is the best game ever every game i buy only 2014 was sucks they have croatia bosnia serbia montenegro all teams and i will donate first for konami $100.00 i was donate and i will again i hope konami will send me the letter one of the best player in pes. Fiffa its for kids they have team monoco they don’t have croatia or bosnia comon kids…………..

  • elvir kurtovic

One more think i can score on pes from 35 yards. I told to all my friends no one can’t bring fiffa in my house i hate fiffa pes pes and only PES…

  • Zado316

    Pes 5, 6 and 10 also winning eleven 8, 9….. Including all versions of WE 9 did not have ice skating, and those games were very responsive. Players positioned themselves/ their body Well in each situation when receiving/ trapping striking and passing the ball. The animations were limited but they opened their bodies in a Contextually Appropriate manner when shooting, trapping or passing the ball. They took mini steps when the ball got away from them due to poor Technique stat, and when u got to the ball there was some rudimentary physics and or animation system that made sure turning on a dime was only capable if;
    A) your controlled player had high Technique, Dribling and agility stats
    B) when exiting/ turning and changing direction from Full speed sprint, you the player had to stop Holding down the Sprint button, slow down then proceed to turn. ( angles greater than 60 degrees from the original direction of motion had big momentum penalties and logger animations to get back the ball. U would bleed off the momentum then turn back to meet up with the ball assuming u cut back into a defender on the wing. Same applied to the defender but those games were very responsive yet realistic which mitigated the long animations.

U may argue that those games had robotic animations, but u can’t claim they looked unnatural like Pes 2016 does a lot of the time with its ice skating animations and weird/ unrealistic finesse shot animation where the ball bends too much, travels too fast and players don’t open their body well given the contex of their exact situation. Pes 6 and those old games did contextual animations right. Players openned their bodies and or took mini steps based on:
-the balls position in relation to ur player
-what u intended to do with it
    – position on the pitch ur players is and iIntended Destination of the ball

Those factors mad Pes 6 animations more realistic and natural than Pes 2016 no matter how robotic u claim them to be.

How Many times have u seen what I describe bellow happen in Pes 2016?
U chase down the ball with a player, get to it, trap it/ control it with ur first touch like Demigod Messi from planet Krypton, who by the way is a 1000 times better than Messi cause, well… He’s only human so he makes mistakes and he… he farts just like the rest of us. Demigod Messi… No! U get to the ball from a sprint trap it and turn with a drag back animation 180 degrees from ur original direction without a momentum penalty all in one animation. No bleeding off momentum animation, no separation of player from ball. How unrealistic is that? Pes 6 is a more refined game IMO.

  • Zado316

Pes 6 may look stiff n robotic but it’s animations can not be described as ice Skating or Arcady.
-There is momentum in players bodies which has to be bled off during turns.
-players open up their bodies appropriately in each situation i.e. Shooting, trapping, passing…
-player take mini steps to get to balls that got away as they position to shoot after ur control input. They don’t just stake to the ball to improve responsiveness thus sacrificing technique stat and deminishing Player ID.
-shots don’t look overpowered and look fitting for the contex with which they were taken
-Technique stat is relevant as player don’t al trap or keep possession the same regardless of ability
    – passing is not ping pong like. Technique stat works

Proper football has nothing to do with video games. Kids play football and video games. i dont undertand your point.
