Tweaky – Taka : PES2012 & Beyond

Highlighting the work of a personal editing community favourite and why Konami should make it easier for him.

If there is one thing that has remained consistent with PES in this generation even if the games themselves haven’t always delivered, it is the excellent output from a passionate editing community. Whether it is kits, teams, player appearances or stadiums, those editing obsessive’s have always delivered as authentic looking experience as possible for the wider community to reap the benefits of.

The editing community consists of more than just these wonderful artists and their wonderful creations, however. Delve deeper into the editing scene and you will find tactical maestro’s who manage to eek out (some would say ‘’fix’’) more from the game that can enhance user experience further thanks to the tactics and strategy options available which although relatively deep, could offer more.

I wish to shine the spotlight on the work of an editing community figure whose work is something of a speciality in itself and always seems to breathe new life into the gameplay experience for me just when I need it most year in, year out. His efforts are not something you see, more so feel.

Super Monkey’s Ball

Chimps – with – Quiffs has specialised in extensive stats edits on the PES series for some years on PS2 and PS3 and such is the quality of his work it can often feel like a PC-like gameplay patch in itself. The tweaks he performs are not wild increases or decreases in values of players certain stats across the board either, with the focus being on improving gameplay balance, response and overall fluidity while also looking to capture the playing styles found across the globe. Essentially, he is looking to make the game play more like a simulation and where a FIFA or NBA2K has gameplay sliders to look to achieve similar (though 2K’s efforts blow EA’s clean out of the water regards impact) Chimps treats each players stats as gameplay sliders in themselves. No mean feat which must take hours upon hours of testing to get it feeling and playing just right, which it does.

Chimps has said that his tweaks on this PES2012 have produced some of the most satisfying results in all his years doing this gameplay edit work and I would tend to agree with him.

Playing the game on -1 speed and with 0 bar passing assistance, matches play out with more of a tactical edge on Super Star difficulty, with the COM showing a great deal more patience and creativity than found with the default settings. While the game plays slower, it feels more responsive and I don’t know what magic Chimps has performed but player individuality is better overall, while being far more grounded into the bargain. Worth noting as well that the R2 dribble does not feel as sticky which is always going to make me happy and although the game may well be slower, the games better passers and dribblers still have that little more zip in their play. Finally, playing on Super Star difficulty, my opinion is that the AI doesn’t cheese it in the way it is known only to well for with ‘’vanilla’’ values. Most games I have played of late have been decided by only a single goal which keeps things very interesting.

Slider Tackling

It begs the question if PES should in fact look to implement gameplay sliders for future releases and make the work of Chimps and others who may wish to get involved in such tweakery far easier. I’ll be blunt and say that I found EA’s slider solution implemented rather cack-handedly, with it lacking the scope required to make it work, thus putting me off the idea completely. It should also be said that I have a level of mistrust of what the merits of gameplay sliders are and have been of the opinion that they are designed more as a developer work around instead of them just getting it right out of the box.

It has been only since I have started playing 2K sports’ marvellous NBA2K12 have I seen the merits of gameplay sliders. Where FIFA’s brush strokes via slider manipulation are broad, 2K have it so as players careful adjustments of a wealth of variables can result in a gameplay experience that allows for a full, real-time simulation of a game to play out to near but not quite perfection in terms of flow, incident and post-game statistics. That is mighty impressive considering it is but a mere videogame simulation of the sport in question using 6year old hardware. Players and even coaches have tendencies sliders as well, so you can essentially customise their behaviours independently of their attributes and formation/tactical/strategic assignments. Imagine something like that in PES where each team could have an AI coach that works in tandem with assigned tactics/strategy and could even change things up. Deep, and maybe contrary to my belief that a realistic real-time 90min match would not be achievable nor a desired gameplay experience, it could well prove possible if those in the community are given the tools to do the job.

To close this quick op-ed, I would encourage UK BLES code PS3 users to try out the game with Chimps tweaks. Special mention of course must go to Goalgerd and Klashman, who are behind the kits, stadiums, formations and tactics in the wonderful European Club Soccer file in which Chimps’ efforts compliment. to late Alan…… i think most are fed up right now.

  2. Gui Cramer says:

Good mention of the 2k sliders, the sliders actually severely change the game from something that isn’t right out of the box into a great simulation of basketball (though 2k11 was better than 2k12).

  3. Kitana Media says:

No Prabs, YOU are fed up. But you’re not really, you wouldn’t be here otherwise.

Let us serve the community, thanks.

Keeps saying download not available when trying to download the base file for kits??

  5. kop 05 says:

Was only a few days ago this site said about Pes getting xbox user more on board . Unless i miss read . It does not mention 360 editors

  6. Limeydrums says:

    Have not tried this yet.
Does Chimps patch improve the shooting?

  7. Gui Cramer says:

    @Limeydrums:

Since his edits are all stats based I’d say no, shooting is a core gameplay concern that can’t truly be solved by adjusting stats.

PS: I sold PES 2012… will be hopeful for 2013 but until then I’ll see if I am able to recoup my ISS 98 for the Nintendo 64.

  8. Limeydrums says:

    @Gui Cramer.

thanks, i suspect that you are correct that it wont fully solve it,
bit it might be somewhat improved?. anyone using the patch who can comment on this?

  9. I Love Sock says:

I play with Chimps patch and shooting is still broken.

  10. Justin 31 uk says:

Hi Kitana – if there is going to be a patch 1.04 sent in from Konami –when would we expect to hear about it?

  11. The Truth says:

NO SLIDERS, PLEASE! Konami just need to get their stats correct. The NBA 2k12 implementation of sliders are good, FIFA12 sliders are really horrible.

Barcelona needs to play like Barcelona, Real should play like Real. It shouldn’t vary depending on who’s console I’m playing on.

  12. salem UAE says:

I like the game, Im having fun more than any other PES series.

I don’t want to talk in details. Overall, the game looks awesome and it needs a little improving in everything to be the best PES ever.

I believe that PES 2013 will be beyond our expectation ^^

  13. Mano says:

    I’m with you Salem…

Of course there are things that should be better already…

But I have the feeling that people aren’t committing themselves anymore to a videogame such as PES. When you keep playing the depth is revealed and community gaming is key for this.

at pesholland.nl the community is growing because of this.

Please try not to just look at the game, but try to master it.

  14. Kitana Media says:

    @ Justin

If we get any new patch, it will come around the same time at the transfer window update. Chances of a new patch are very low.

    @ Kop 05

Feel free to link me to that statement. Can’t remember saying that at all.

I think konami need to fix a few things especially in defending areas where the game is not quite right and the collision detection is awful. I was playing phil jones as a centre back an one of my mates ac milan players went to go round him and the ball passed through phil jones’s shin. Come on he scored from that its friggin frustrating that they cannot get the defending right plus the slide tackling goes off at funny angles. You are in front of a player with the ball running towards to do a slide tackle you should tackle towards the ball unless player changes direction they had that part right 2 seasons ago now you just slide at odd angles and miss the ball. Plus the com pushes your defenders off the ball and get no foul but when you try to claim the ball cleanly you get done for fouling and give away silly frees for very little that would not be picked up on by the ref. There are some serious flaws in the game that need to be addressed and untill konami do this they are going to be always below par of their former glory.

17 jan adam said this I think we’ve had the Xbox 360 discussion before? PES as a series is dead on Microsoft’s platform, and Konami need to resurrect it as soon as possible. Not sure on PES 2012 comparisons, but PES 2011 PS2 outsold Xbox 360 PES 2011 worldwide. So 200 guys playing MLO on that platform makes sense to me.

Today was the day that PES 2012 broke me!! Bought pes every year and argued till I was blue in the face that pes was great!! Well it’s not!! It’s terd! It’s a huge let down!! I play uncharted and love every minute!!

Wow moments , I play Nba and its awesome… But I don’t want to play them …. I love pes …. So I gave it one more chance but it shits on me every time!!

The game is a joke, scripting a joke, animations a joke, shooting is worst in series!! Some days you can play beautiful football, other days feels like the disk ain’t spinning quick enough!!

In short I’m sick of being lied to by Konami and members of the community that hype this game ….. Then claim preview code was better when we all buy it and it’s shite!!

So I’m setting myself free from the PES community as it only serves bad shit in my life now!!

Konami have ruined the magic they had! All I know is if I ran my companies service like they do then I’d be broke!

  18. dennis says:

I was getting really frustrated with the game when I was playing Pro, 10 minutes, 3 bar pass assistance and -1 speed. I popped in 2011 and liked it but realized that too many game play additions were added in 2012 for me to go back. I changed the game to 1 bar pass assistance, 15 minutes, and -2 speed and it is playing really great. The game seems much fairer and more thought out. It does feel a tad slow at times but I’m really enjoying the game a lot more now.

  19. zohaib says:

can i use this on BLUS?

  20. Chimps says:

Thanks very much for the editorial and the positive comments about my work!

I will have a loo at any dead links for the base file. You should still be able to try the game play file without it, just it won’t have the strips and emblems for added teams.

Like Alan says, I have been doing this for years across formats PC, PS2 and PS3. Now solely developing for the PS3, which takes much long as their is no way of editing the files on a pc and using a global editor. Over the years I think I have had about 300,000 downloads, but as the game has became less popular and region specific files have been introduced, these have dropped dramatically as my files can now only be played on the UK version.

What I would want to see introduced is a global stat editor into the game. This would make editing much faster and somewhere along the way someone would come up with the perfect balance of game play.

If possible, Files need to be able to be transferred between formats or regions.

We also need consistency in how the game plays between modes and pitches. If someone thinks they have created the best game they can and then starts a master league, they should not then be presented with a different game and then different again when they play at night.

I am currently working on an updated file which makes the game a little more responsive and open compared to my last file and fixes stamina issues in the master league
